Transformation of Sentence

পৃথিবীতে প্রায় সাড়ে তিন হাজারের বেশি ভাষা আছে। প্রতিটি ভাষায় রয়েছে নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ শব্দ ভাণ্ডার। কিন্তু কোন ভাষায় কতটি বাক্য আছে? এটা নির্দিষ্ট করে কারও পক্ষে বলা সম্ভব নয়। তাই বলা হয়ে থাকে, যেকোন ভাষায় শব্দের সংখ্যা সীমিত; কিন্তু বাক্যের সংখ্যা অসীম। অন্যভাবে বলা যায়, আমরা সসীম শব্দ ভাণ্ডার ব্যবহার করে অসীম সংখ্যক বাক্য গঠন করতে পারি। কিন্তু কিভাবে? একটি পদ্ধতি হলো বাক্যের অর্থ পরিবর্তন না করে শুধু গঠনরূপ পরিবর্তন করে নতুন নতুন বাক্য গঠন করা যায়। আবার শব্দ ব্যবহারে বৈচিত্র এনেও নতুন নতুন বাক্য গঠন করা যায়। এভাবে অর্থ সঙ্গতি বজায় রেখে ব্যাকরণ মেনে নতুন নতুন বাক্য গঠন করতে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছে রূপান্তরমূলক উৎপাদনশীল ব্যাকরণের (Transformational Generative Grammar বা সংক্ষেপে TGG) ধারনা। কোন কোন ক্ষেত্রে transformation সম্ভব? একটু চিন্তা করলেই নিম্নোক্ত বিষয়সমুহ মনের পর্দায় ভেসে ওঠে।

Transformation বনাম Conversion

অর্থ সঙ্গতি বজায় রেখে শুধু গঠনকাঠামো পরিবর্তন করে এক প্রকার বাক্যকে অন্য প্রকারের বাক্যে রূপান্তর করাকে Transformation of Sentence বলে। অন্যদিকে, অর্থ পরিবর্তন করে এক প্রকার বাক্যকে অন্য প্রকারের বাক্যে রূপান্তর করাকে Conversion of Sentence বলে। নিচের বাক্যগুলো দেখুন।

1. Man is mortal.

    Man is not immortal. (অর্থ সঙ্গতি বজায় রয়েছে। তাই এটি Transformation of Sentence)।

    Man is not mortal. (অর্থ পরিবর্তিত হয়েছে। তাই এটি Conversion of Sentence)।

v  Clause কী?

= Clause হলো একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যেখানে একটি subject ও একটি predicate থাকে। Clause কে কোন পূর্ণাঙ্গ বাক্য হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয় না। একটি বাক্যে সাধারণত এবং কমপক্ষে একটি স্বাধীন Clause এবং এক বা একাধিক অধীন Clause থাকে। সুতরাং Clause দুই প্রকার। যথা:

1. Principal Clause/Main Clause/Independent Clause

2. Subordinate Clause/Dependent Clause

এছাড়া Coordinate Clause নামে আরেক ধরনের Clause আছে। Coordinating conjunction দ্বারা (যেমন:and, but, and so, so, therefore, whereas, as well as, either.. .of, neither... nor, Not only... but also, otherwise, both... and etc.) যখন কোন Principal Clause অন্য Clause এর সাথে যুক্ত হয়, তখন তাকে Coordinate Clause বলে।

স্মরণীয়, উপরিউক্ত Clause গুলো হলো Finite Clause, অর্থাৎ এগুলোর predicate অংশে finite verb থাকে। Non-finite clause এর predicate অংশে finite verb থাকে না।

নিচের উদাহরণগুলো দেখুন।

1. He went out after he had closed the door. (He went out= Independent Clause, after he had closed the door= Dependent Clause)

2. He closed the door and (he) went out. (He closed the door= Principal clause, and (he) went out= Coordinate Clause)

3. Closing the door, he went out.                

4. Closed the door, he went out.                          Underlined clause= nonfinite

5. Upon/after closing the door, he went out.   Clause

Independent clause হওয়ার শর্তাবলী:

Ø  subject ও predicate থাকতে হবে।

Ø  স্বাধীন বাক্য হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে।

Ø  একাধিক Clause যুক্ত  Sentence এর অংশ হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে।

Ø  এর আগে or, for, nor, so, yet, and, but – এসব conjunction/connector থাকতে পারে।

Dependent clause হওয়ার শর্তাবলী:

Ø  subject ও predicate থাকতে হবে।

Ø  স্বাধীন বাক্য হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।

Ø  সবসময়ই  অর্থের জন্য অন্য Clause এর উপর নির্ভরশীল হবে। 

Dependent clause ৩ প্রকার:

          (a) Adjective Clause/Relative Clause

            (b) Adverb Clause/Adverbial Clause

            (c) Noun Clause

Adjective Clause/Relative Clause: একটি dependent clause যা adjective এর ন্যায় কাজ করে; অর্থাৎ noun/pronoun কে modify করে। Adjective Clause/Relative Clause এর পূর্বে who, which, that, where, when, whose, whom, whoever, etc বসে। নিচের উদাহরণগুলো দেখুন।

1. This is the tree which was fallen down last night.

2. The boy who guided us in the forest was a native person.

Adverb Clause/Adverbial Clause: একটি dependent clause যা adverb এর ন্যায় কাজ করে; অর্থাৎ verb/adjective/adverb কে modify করে। Adverb Clause/Adverbial Clause because, although, when, if, until, as if ইত্যাদি conjunction দ্বারা শুরু হয়। নিচের উদাহরণগুলো দেখুন।

1. Unless you work hard, you cannot pass in the exam.

2. The patient had died before the doctor came.

Noun Clause: একটি dependent clause noun এর ন্যায় কাজ করে; অর্থাৎ বাক্যে subject/object/complement হিসেবে কাজ করে। Noun Clause Adjective Clause এর ন্যায় that, who, when, which, where, whether, why, how ইত্যাদি conjunction দ্বারা শুরু হয়। নিচের উদাহরণগুলো দেখুন।

1. Verb এর Subject হিসেবে- What he wants now is a book on Shakespeare.

2. Verb এর object হিসেবে- The mariner told us how he escaped the ship.

3. Linking verb-এর Complement হিসেবে- Leisure is what I need most.
